Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 26 December, 2016 - A recent spike in shark sightings along the coast of Victoria Australia has forced officials to close area beaches. Fairhaven Beach was closed to the public as life savers ordered all swimmers out of the water on Monday.

The evacuation occurred after 30 sharks were spotted by a helicopter on Christmas Day. Fisheries Victory spotted 12 sharks between five and 14 feet long according to a report by SBS News.

High temperatures have brought thousands out to the beach for Christmas break.

"If you are considering going to the beach always go to one that is patrolled, swim between the flags and follow the instructions of life savers or authorities,”  Fisheries Victoria said in a released statement.

The species of sharks was not determined. The area will continue to be monitored during the week.
